Alfred the Great

I wanted to paint this picture of my dog Alfie, as I know exactly when and where we were when this was taken. Do not be fooled by Alfie’s innocent face; he is a little red devil! Alfie is not at all receptive to any of his four-legged ‘friends’. The only one he would tolerate was my other terrier, Oscar, who was topdog.

Red is an aggressive colour and I felt it apt here to reflect this part of Alfie’s character, so wanted to include it where I could. Despite being red, I made the decision to omit the bulky harness from my painting - it risked drawing too much attention - and instead included just his hot red collar. You’ll spot that I even gave him a little suggestion of red on his face too.

Rather than using greens for the background I decided to use red here too, for a unitying effect. I kept
