Chatsworth pulled itself up by its bootstraps

Captain Dwight Soupen, recently retired from the Durban Metropolitan Police, has a remarkable memory about Chatsworth.

He arrived in Bayview as a toddler in 1962 and remains in the same district as a pensioner. His erstwhile neighbour is the Reverend Alvin Sigamoney, also retired from another branch of law enforcement, the Anglican Church.

Sigamoney was eight months old when his parents moved into the township. Both families forcibly removed by the notorious Group Areas Act of 1950. Both families have roots in Clairwood, where Soupen and
