When the Government talks about a “sustainable” bass fishery, it really means continuing to fish at a level that kills the maximum number of bass over the long term (what the scientists call “Maximum Sustainable Yield”). This means a stock size just 33 per cent of what it would be if it was unfished, which is clearly far too low.
