‘DAD’S STILL BEATING US ON HIS BIKE AT 86’
‘If it’s Saturday, you’ll find me racing to get to my parents’ house by 9.50am. If I’m late, I know that Dad will be looking at his watch, eager to get going on the cycle ride he’s planned for us.
For the past five years, he’s been leading these weekly sorties. My sister Mari-Anne, 50, and I follow – along with my partner Geoff, 61, who started joining us around a year ago.
We’re all equally excited to see where Dad, a born adventurer, will be taking us. If we’re late, we joke that he’ll punish us with an extra-hard route. It won’t be too hard for him, though. At 86, Dad is by far the fastest of us whizzing through the glorious East Sussex countryside. In fact, my mum, Maureen, 87, only realised just how fast Dad cycles downhill when she saw a video that he put on YouTube! She was horrified, but probably not 100% surprised.
