THE WEEK

Monster munch

IT was a glorious start to the week as Top Rank officially announced a lesser-spotted ‘undisputed’ fight to take place on Boxing Day. Merry Christmas one and all.

This one will unify the super-bantamweight division where Naoya Inoue, the No.1 at the weight, holds the WBC the WBO belts against WBA and IBF titlist Marlon Tapales.

It has been an up and down year for boxing, perennially battling against Misfits and misdemeanours, but let it never be said that 2023 was not a year where we finally got some fights that mattered. Terence Crawford against Errol Spence, Inoue against Stephen Fulton, Gervonta Davis against Ryan Garcia, maybe even Tyson Fury against Oleksandr Usyk - and now this one in Tokyo - the only fight that really matters at 122lbs.

But as one fight was made, another fell by the wayside learned late on Wednesday evening that an injury to Pat McCormack would rule him out of his headline fight against Peter Dobson scheduled for November 11. Matchroom confirmed Shabaz Masoud as the new headliner.
