Agroecology Our organic future

Agroecology is a bit of a challenge to explain as, like a jewel, it has many facets. The word itself is a contraction of agriculture and ecology. Fundamentally, it is an interdisciplinary science that studies the interactions of organisms with each other and their non-living environment. It is a huge science, with many sub-disciplines.

Agroecology at heart is the science of agricultural ecology, both studying agriculture through an ecological lens and doing agriculture with an ecological mindset. However, the name is slightly misleading as agroecology is much broader than ecology and includes ‘lower’ level sciences such as plant and animal biology, and ‘higher’ level sciences such as engineering, sociology, computing, meteorology, and so on. It is consequently a true capstone science: it pulls together many scientific disciplines
