Ten years ago, I suffered a spinal stroke and spent eight months in hospital. When I returned home, I’d regained movement in my right side and partially in my left, and learnt to get around with sticks.

At the time of my stroke, I had a busy job as an RSPCA officer, which involved spending lots of time outdoors. The life I returned to was very different. I effectively became a prisoner in my house, unable to do the things I wanted. If I dropped anything, it would lie there
