It might take you a while to gen up on the history of railways in the North East history ready for the Stockton & Darlington 200th anniversary celebrations in 2025 and this book is a good place to start.

It is certainly a most complex subject, and this useful Middleton guide is probably the wordiest the publisher has ever published – the images seem play second fiddle on our grand tour of the many lines that once threaded through parts of County Durham.

We are reminded that the S&D didn’t just run between the two towns, but was constructed to bring coal down to the River Tees
