Dealing with bovine Johne's disease

Bovine Johne’s (pronounced ‘yo-nees’) disease (BJD), or paratuberculosis, is a fatal wasting disease of cattle and goats, caused by a chronic bacterial infection.

While certain antibiotics may provide some temporary relief, infected cattle will inevitably die.

Discovered by German bacteriologist and vet Heinrich Johne, in 1905, BJD is caused by the bacterium mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis, the main cause of tuberculosis in humans, and , the main cause of tuberculosis in cattle and occasionally also in humans
