Winning more than one third of the 2023 British Touring Car Championship season’s races was not only Ash Sutton’s best year-long return yet, it was the best of all time.
The Alliance Racing Ford Focus man started out on the grass at Donington Park after a dramatic opening few hundred yards of this year’s contest and finished that way too when he was shuffled out of the top 10 battle pack at Brands Hatch in October.
But he made no mistake in between. There were all kinds of wins: dominating from pole, battling through the pack from the rear, wins in the wet, wins in the dry and some under the sternest of pressure. He had all bases covered.
He is not exactly a veteran in terms of the category either. Sutton’s journey began back in 2016 when he stepped into the category as the reigning Renault UK Clio Cup title holder and his success in 2023 meant that he has won half of the BTCC championships he has entered, which is a remarkable return.
