CLASS 20

Out of action since March, Locomotive Services’ Type 1s Nos. D8096 (20096) and D8107 (20107) Jocelyn Fielding 1940-2020 were hauled from Crewe to Barrow Hill behind No. D1924 (47810) Crewe Diesel Depot on September 22. Meanwhile, later that morning LSL Nos. 20118 Saltburn-by-the-Sea and 20132 left Barrow Hill bound for Worksop, where they collected Harry Needle Railroad Company Nos. 20302/311 before returning to Barrow Hill. During the early afternoon, Nos. 20118/132 and 47810 set off for Crewe, running via Burton-on-Trent and Lichfield Trent Valley.

CLASS 33

An inspection tour of stations in London using saloon No. 999506 ran on September 29, ‘top and tailed’ by West Coast Railways ‘Cromptons’ Nos. 33029 and 33207 Jim Martin. Having set off from Southall for Maidenhead, the first duty was the 2Z01 09.48 Maidenhead to London Euston. Thereafter, the saloon was taken to London Waterloo via Acton Yard, North Pole International and to Hayes & Harlington again via Acton Yard, before retiring to Southall depot in mid-afternoon.

CLASS 37

Regularly employed on the movement of multiple units thanks to its Dellner coupler, Rail Operations Group No. 37884 Cepheus rescued the failed hydrogen demonstrator set No. 799201 on September 5, hauling it from Gloucester Yard to Long Marston. The ‘37’ paid two visits to Birkenhead North to collect Class 507 and ‘508’ electric multiple units for scrap before handling the 5Q76 08.03 Ely Papworth-Sims Metals on September 14, with set No. 317882 (see Units). By September 25, the ‘37’ was bound for Kilmarnock Bonnyton hauling tri-mode unit No. 769959 from Long Marston (see Headline News). When the 1P15 07.26 Norwich-Liverpool Street (formed of three Class 755 sets) failed near Bow Junction on September 26, it was rescued by ROG No. 37601 Perseus, the locomotive towing the failed bi-mode units back to Stratford to detrain the passengers. Later that same day, ROG No. 37608 Andromeda was given the task of hauling High Speed Train power cars Nos. 43010 and 43192 plus six Mk.3 coaches running as the 5L46 09.57 Plymouth Laira-Ely Papworth.

West Coast Railways Nos. 37676 and 37685 ‘top and tailed’ the ‘Dalesman’ 1Z52 07.34 Chester-Carlisle as far as Hellifield on September 19, No. 37685 ‘tailing’ the steam locomotive over the Settle and Carlisle route. The return journey ran via Shap, with the Type 3s reunited at Carnforth for the final leg
