CLASS 20

TYPE 1s Nos. 20132+20311 relinquished their regular work on the movement of London Underground stock to take part in the GBRf charity tour on September 21, ‘top and tailing’ with No. 66728 Institution of Railway Operators on the 1Z20/07.08 Euston-Wellingborough Yard via the Bletchley to Bedford line. The tour then ran south to Tonbridge West Yard via Brixton, Gravesend and Maidstone West. At Tonbridge, the Class 66 was replaced by a pair of ‘electro-diesels’ for the next leg to Acton, where the two English Electric Type 1s were detached.

Equally unusual was the sight of Nos. 20007 and 20205 sandwiched between a pair of recently-overhauled independent snowploughs at Derby late on September 24, the duo taking them on a nocturnal test run to Barrow Hill and back.

CLASS 33

NARROW-bodied ‘Crompton’ No. 33207 Jim Martin partnered No. 37516 on the 1Z40/08.15 Chester-Carlisle on September 4 before handing over to ‘Jubilee’ 4-6-0 No. 45699 Galatea at Hellifield. In order to move the loco to Southall, No. 33207 was dispatched light from Carnforth to Hellifield on September 11 to ‘tail’ the 1Z51/16.41 Carlisle-Radlett return charter with Nos. 47580+47760, the Type 4s having replaced 8F No. 48151.

Two days later, No. 33207 was back on former Southern Region metals when leaving Swanage atop the 1Y52/16.55 to London Victoria, which the ‘33/2’ worked to Southampton. Here, the train reversed allowing A4 ‘Pacific’ No. 60009 Union of South Africa to lead back to London via Romsey and Laverstock. There was still time for No. 33207 to take to the main line once more as on September 23, along with No. 47760, it worked the 1Z66/09.45 King’s Cross-Norwich and 17.15 return.

CLASS 37

SUBSTITUTING for Stanier ‘Black 5’ No. 45231, DRS Type 3 No. 37605 hauled the ‘Sugar Loaf Mountaineer’ charter on September 23, running as the 1Z52/08.20 Birmingham New Street-Bynea via Shrewsbury and the Heart of Wales line (see also Railtours). The previous day, two more DRS examples Nos. 37602+37606 had charge of a Pathfinder Tours special from
