Classic cars can seem oddly at home among boats, almost as though the traditional lines of yachts have something in common with the golden age in car styling. Here, at the Cameron House Marina on Loch Lomond, we have a pretty setting for some photos but this amazing Honduras Maroon Corvette is drawing the eye much more than all the expensive motorboats. Partly it’s the colour – the boats are mostly white – and partly it’s the Corvette’s fabulous shape. It’s got a lot more flair than most modern boats, and perhaps needs to be among the sleek, sparkle-finish Chris-Craft or Glastron speedboats of 50 years ago to fit in.
Hard as it is to believe, the last examples from the C1 Corvette generation are now more than 60 years old. Most of the best bits of car styling have a ‘rightness’ that overcomes their age, and this is one of them. Yes, the shape probably looked rather Fifties to American eyes by the time the Sting Ray arrived, but some of the ’62-only features on this car such as the lack of side-cove chrome and a blacked-out grille kept it fresh.
