BUILDING CONSENSUS

I have been following with interest the ongoing debate around conservation and the environment that inevitably also involves the future of fieldsports. I am persuaded by the reasoned arguments, research and scientific evidence provided by experts on behalf of the fishing and shooting communities.

I am also equally persuaded by the reasoned arguments, research and scientific evidence provided by experts on behalf of the wildlife and conservation communities. I understand the concept of the three-legged stool but would add a fourth: money, funding, finance – call it what you will but nothing meaningful can happen without it.

I am, however, becoming disillusioned about the prospects for any real progress because of the increasingly divisive nature of the arguments and the apparent unwillingness of either side to even consider the validity of anything said by the other. This is surely a waste of valuable resources at a time when there needs to be a unified approach.

Some years ago I worked in the sand and gravel industry at a timesolution was reached. Are there not parallels today?
