Flying the flag
At the ripe old age of 75, I completed a solo sail around Britain earlier this year in my 26-foot Parker 27 lift-keel yacht which I completed in three months, albeit via the Crinan and Caledonian canals. I crossed to Kilmore Quay from Solva in Wales and spent several weeks working my way up to Ballykelly in Northern Ireland before crossing back to the mainland via Campbeltown in Scotland. I flew the Irish courtesy and ‘Q’ flag on the crossing to Kilmore Quay and subsequently for the entire time I was in the Republic’s waters, until crossing into Northern Irish waters about two weeks later, having spent a week in Dun Laoghaire visiting my in-laws.
