The goose and the golden egg

During the winter months, here on the Solent, we get to enjoy the occasional quiet sunny day when an impromptu ‘lunchtime stop’ at a variety of nearby destinations has always been appealing. However, the exorbitant cost of a berth, for example £12-15 for a 10m boat, even before the pull of the first pint and lunch, makes the idea completely unpalatable.

Consequently, I and numerous others have given up on undertaking such trips but note that on such days these venues have numerous empty berths which could be generating some income but not if the prices are unreasonable. A simple choice for the commissioners it seems – a berth earning something or one earning nothing!

They are not only depriving themselves of income but also their local outlets, which so desperately need all the business they can get nowadays. When mentioned, one common thread is
