THE OAK CONNECTION

They go by the Latin name Quercus: the oak trees that we find across whitetail country. I think the name a funny one – it sounds like quirky – yet the bond between oak trees and deer (and myriad other forms of wildlife for that matter) is anything but. Rather, the oak-whitetail connection is direct and straightforward. It starts with and revolves around acorns, yes. But the link reaches and runs even deeper.

A HUNT IN THE OAKS

It was the last day of a gun hunt in hill-country farmland of fields and woods, and my son Jeremiah still needed a deer.
