I AM NOT a dog person. The trouble with canine companions is that at some point, you’re going to be picking up after them. Or paying a four-figure vet bill.
Yes, they’re cute and fluffy, with endless enthusiasm for life, but they do come with downsides. Which is why it’s far better to enjoy them vicariously, by spending time with your friend’s pets. You get to enjoy entertaining walks, they get to deal with vet bills, picking up, wrecked TV remotes and that all-pervasive reek of wet dog…
Labradors galore
This pretty much explains how we ended up on a campsite in Cumbria with our good friends Mark and Catherine, and their two Labradors, Jake and Max.
Golden Lab Jake is one of my favourite creatures and he was born with an old head on his shoulders. Ever since he was a pup, he’s had a Victor Meldrew-like character - whenever he was over-fussed or didn’t like something, he’d simply stand up, huff and then trudge off into a quiet corner.
I thoroughly approve of this curmudgeonly behaviour. If
