Climbing and rambling roses

STRONG-GROWING roses that need a fence or a wall or a mature shrub for support, that grow the natural way as roses do in hedgerows and along woodland glades, fall into two distinct groups – rambling roses and climbing roses. Both are invaluable garden roses, but it’s important to understand which are which and to grow the right varieties in the right place. There are fragrant varieties in both groups.

Rambling roses

Rambling roses tend to be the most vigorous, with some surging into the tops of mature trees. They tend to have generous clusters of relatively small flowers opening in one spectacular flush over a fewdeadheaded – although the dead flowers are often held too high to reach.
