How can I take dianthus cuttings?

Q I have two garden pinks which have a lovely perfume and colour when they bloom. They have both gone woody and leggy and some of the stems break very easily. Can I take cuttings as replacement plants, and if so, how?

I am sorry that your pinks are becoming woody and shoots are tending to break. The best way to rejuvenate your plants is to take cuttings of new shoots. Simply tug the ‘pipings’, as they are called, from leaf axils in summer and insert them to half their length in pots of gritty
