Dear HIW, How was it decided that long hair is appropriate for women and shorter hair for men? When did men start to have shorter hair as a ‘manly’ hairstyle?

Different countries, cultures and religions have had differing views on hairstyles throughout history. In ancient Greek and Roman cultures, long hair symbolised wealth and power. Both men and women in royal families grew their hair long, as this made them appear elite. Their prisoners and servants were forced to shave their hair to highlight their social status.
