New Zealand’s South Island is well known for its outstanding trout fishing and clear, fast flowing rivers.
Anyone who hasn’t fished New Zealand could be mistaken for thinking it’s easy fishing. The trout are big and abundant, the rivers are always clear, and the skies are always blue, right? Well, sometimes that’s true. When all of the stars align, it can offer some incredible fishing. Then reality sets in… There’s a reason these rivers have so much water and the countryside is so lush and green. It’s called rain and in new Zealand, when it rains, it pours, and snows, and blows!
So what happens when you book a trip to this trout fishing paradise and the weather doesn’t play fair?
THE PLAN
The plan was to catch up with fly fishing guide Nick Reygaert and fish his home waters around Fiordland in the south west corner of New Zealand’s South Island. I fished with Nick last year in the Kimberley. When he’s not guiding around the Fiordland and Southland region of the South Island, or making fly fishing films, he hosts trips to some of the best fishing destinations in the world.
