Oops, oops! Alan Freke was quite right to castigate PUB (in the August magazine, RC232) for misspelling Bob Currie’s name as ‘Curry’. The young PUB was brought up in the Midlands, where Bob was well known, being Midland Editor of ‘The Motor Cycle’ somewhat before ‘Classic’ motorcycles existed – although he wrote interesting historic columns such as ‘Time Traveller’ even then.
The VMCC, however, was well established, and as soon as they adopted the 25 year rule, PUB’s 1937 Vincent HRD Comet became eligible, and was used in such events as The Tour of Birmingham. That traversed the outer ring road, starting and finishing outside Birmingham’s Science Museum – more inviting than it sounds because in early years they would fire up their steam engine exhibits for the day – and Bob would often be the commentator.
Later, when overcoming her shyness, PUB came to know Bob a bit more and was even invited to his office to examine old photographic records for illustrations in Geoff Preece’s book ‘HRD Motorcycles – Produced by
