A City in Crisis

More than a week after the taps ran dry in the northern suburbs of eThekwini, officials were no closer to understanding what had gone wrong.

The matter has been reported to the police amid suspicion of vandalism, and plans have been put in place to provide water to the affected areas.

However, this latest incident adds to a growing list of problems eThekwini, under mayor Mxolisi Kaunda, is facing. These include:

Broken or leaking water pipes which result in half of the water the city buys going to waste

Broken sewage lines which cause raw sewage to flow on roads

Problems at treatment plants causing sewage to make its way into the sea, raising E coli levels at Durban’s beaches to high levels, and keeping tourists away

Crime levels being high and only 69
