After decades without la ying a finger on either the 450cc AMA supercross or motocross championship trophies, Team Honda HRC finally broke their hoodoo this year, as they claimed all five titles on offer. With the exception of the 450 supercross championship won by Chase Sexton, it was Aussie siblings, Hunter and Jett Lawrence who changed the face of the sport forever as they clinched both Monster Energy AMA Supercross 250 titles, then wrapped up both the 250 and 450 AMA Pro Motocross titles.
It's the first time that a manufacturer has won all five titles. It was also the first time that brothers had won two titles, let alone four, in the same year. 20-year-old Jett Lawrence became the first rookie to win the 450 Motocross Championship in his first campaign, and just the third rider ever (and the first rookie) to complete the outdoors season undefeated, with a perfect 22-race win streak.
What we witnessed outdoors this year was remarkable, especially when you consider the uphill battle Hunter (24) faced with injuries, and the big question-marks Jett faced about how he'd fare in the premier class. 2023 will be talked about as the year Australian riders dominated the American scene, and there's a good chance the two Sunshine Coast-born brothers are just getting started.
We caught up with them in the days after the final AMA Pro Motocross round at Ironman
