The Survival of the fastest

The 2023 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship was one for the record books. Not only was it the first time two siblings of any nationality had ever cleaned up both 250SX titles, but it was the first time Honda swept all three supercross classes in the history of the sport.

The casualty ward became a who’s who of the series as crowd favourites, and both former and defending champions found themselves sidelined with injuries. By the time the championships limped into Rice Eccles Stadium for the Salt Lake City finale, just a smattering of factory riders were left standing in each of the three classes.

Factory power-house Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing and two of the three KTM group teams didn’t have anyone lining up for the 450SX final round, while almost every 250SX team was plagued with injuries throughout the championship.

While the 450SX championship’s plot twists and injury list was a fascinating affair, the focus of most Australians was primarily on Sunshine Coast-born phenoms Hunter and Jett Lawrence as they did the unthinkable – secured both the 250SX West and East Championships.
