Why YouTube is right to clamp down on ad-blockers

I’d like to stand up for what I expect is a minority of readers who are in favour of YouTube forcing viewers to disable advert blockers. I can’t see anything wrong with YouTube’s countdown device that you write about in Issue 666 (page 7, pictured above right). If anything, I think YouTube is being too lenient. At least it gives you a warning that you’re about to be shown an advert.

I admit that I’m not a neutral observer in this debate. I have a YouTube channel on birdwatching that I make a little money from. But I’ve noticed that this revenue has fallen over the past year, presumably because so many people are blocking adverts. It’s only a hobby, so it won’t bankrupt me, but I do sympathise with those for whom YouTube is a livelihood. I’m sure they’ve lost a lot more revenue than I have.
