WHERE WE LEFT OFF

In the finale of the original 1993–2004 Cheers spinoff, psychiatrist Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) said goodbye to his family in Seattle and headed to Chicago to live happily ever after with girlfriend Charlotte (Laura Linney).

WHAT’S NEXT?

Nearly 20 years later, following the funeral of beloved father Martin (John Mahoney, who died in 2018), a single Frasier arrives in Boston to guest lecture at Harvard and, more importantly, reconnect with his estranged firefighter son Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott). “Frasier’s discovering that he missed some things [with Freddy] he wished he hadn’t,” Grammer notes.

We’ll meet spacey nephew David (Anders Keith), son of Niles and Daphne (David Hyde Pierce and Jane Leeves, who don’t appear), and get visits from Frasier’s ex, Lilith (Bebe Neuwirth) and former colleague Roz (Peri Gilpin). Plus, there’s a bar with a familiar name. “The idea was always ‘We’re going to honor John,’” Grammer says. “So, the bar’s name is Mahoney’s.” Cheers to that! —Jim Halterman
