ALIBABA’S NEW CHAIRMAN

Cofounder Joe Tsai became chairman of the Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group on September 10.

The Taiwan-born Canadian businessman joined Alibaba in 1999 as a member of the company’s founding team and has served on the board of directors since its inception. He was chief financial officer until May 2013 and executive vice chairman until this month. He has been the initiator and driver of several of Alibaba’s strategic investments and plans to expand internationally. In 2014, he led the company to go public on the New York Stock Exchange.

Tsai received his bachelor’s degree in economics and East Asian studies from Yale University in the U.S. and a juris doctor degree from Yale Law School.
