When my two-year-old son Alfie started feeling poorly in December 2018, coming down with one infection after another, my husband Andrew, then 38, and I put it down to the usual bugs kids pick up at nursery. Then, in May 2019, he got a rash all over his body and after antibiotics didn’t work, we pushed for blood tests. The results were nothing that we were expecting.
Alfie had a form of blood cancer – acute B-cell lymphoblastic leukaemia. Andrew and I were in shock. How could our toddler have cancer? It felt unbelievably cruel.
Alfie was admitted to the Royal Marsden Hospital in Surrey. He responded well to chemotherapy, spending a month in hospital, and I
