On 4 August 2020, the city of Aalst in Belgium was left stunned.
At 8.30am that morning, Jurgen Demesmaeker, then 49, a local estate agent, went to a police station.
There, he confessed to officers that he’d killed his girlfriend Ilse by hitting her over the head with a hammer.
Jurgen had started dating Ilse Uyttersprot, 53, earlier that year.
The mum-of-two was a respected councillor in Aalst and had been the city’s mayor between 2007 and 2012.
