The Aussie jewel in Denmark’s Crown

The Weekly’s 90th birthday couldn’t be celebrated properly without a shoot with Australia’s very own royal, Crown Princess Mary, at home in Frederik VIII’s Palace on Amalienborg Square in the heart of Copenhagen.

I first met Mary and visited this incredible palace 10 years ago and while as the magazine’s royal correspondent, palaces are part of the job, this one is definitely my favourite. It really does take your breath away. An extensive five-year restoration which began as soon as the Crown Prince Couple married had transformed the interior into a melting pot of historic gilt splendour and contemporary Danish design. The original pine floorboards were stripped back, giving the floors a fresh natural glow, but most striking were the rich colours and vast canvasses of contemporary artwork by 10 Danish artists that adorned the walls.

Built in the 1750s and then redecorated in the Late Empire style in the 1820s, the palace originally showcased the best artists of the era, and Crown Prince Frederik wanted to continue that tradition.
