Listed real estate investment trusts (REITs) enable investors to buy stakes in diverse property assets without having to invest the huge sums involved in buying property directly.

REITs primarily hold big commercial and residential property assets, which they lease to tenants. The rental income, less expenses, is generally passed onto investors, and this regular income is a major reason many investors are attracted to this sector.

But the opportunities to invest in international property through buying an Australian REIT are limited, with A-REITs accounting for just 3% of the world's REIT opportunity. Global real estate investment trusts (G-REITs) account for the lion's share, 97%, of the total REIT sector.
