August 2024

1 Today is a good day to create an outdoor summer tablescape. Use a garden table to display cut flowers in a heavy-based container or a particularly pretty pot plant, such as your best geranium, succulents or an elegant grass. A display like this through the summer will make the garden look dressed and showcase a plant that’s looking especially good now.

3 On Watermelon Day, what you need to know is how to pick a ripe watermelon. The answer: Knock on it and listen for a hollow sound. Also, note that a ripe melon will feel heavy and smell sweet. If you are growing your own watermelon, Harrowsmith’s gardening experts, Mark and Ben Cullen, recommend choosing a compact variety like ‘Sugar Baby.’

5 The Civic Holiday is celebrated on the first Monday of August, and it’s a public holiday in some provinces and territories but not a statutory holiday. It’s called Natal Day in NS and PEI, New Brunswick Day in NB, Terry Fox Day in MB, Saskatchewan Day in SK, Heritage Day in AB, British Columbia Day in BC, Simcoe Day in Toronto, Colonel By Day in Ottawa, Joseph Brant Day in Burlington, ON and Benjamin Vaughan day in the City of Vaughan, ON. That’s right, in different parts of Ontario, the holiday has different names. Whatever you call it, have a great day!
