Norman crossbowmen
Company: Victrix
Size: 28mm ‘foot to eye’ or 32mm tall
Era: Early medieval
Price: £36.00 for 36 infantry
The latest Victrix Dark Age set is Norman crossbowmen. They would be fully described as crossbowmen suitable for several armies of the early medieval period – that's a bit of a mouthful, so we'll stick with ‘Normans’. The sets consists of six frames each with six torsos, three in chainmail, one in quilted armour, and two unarmoured. Each torso can be built a variety of ways (typically three) and has various head options (over 30!). The models themselves are well sculpted and are easy to assemble – however do keep hold of the instruction guide and read it carefully, as some parts will only fit with a specific figure. Victrix has put a set of instructions up online just in case. The detailing on these models is very good. Size-wise, the models are a little on the heroic side but should fit with most existing ranges. The variety of head options allows the models to be built as Western Europeans, as early Italians, or as Arabized crossbows (Andalucians or crusader states).

After its successful Hürtgen Forest Kickstarter, RKX Miniatures has now run a Kickstarter for Operation Plunder, the crossing of the Rhine in 1945. The Kickstarter focused on Canadian infantry (the 9th Canadian Infantry Brigade) and has provided STL files that let you create command, two infantry rifle squads each of ten men, support weapons (2” mortar, 3” mortar, Vickers HMG, and PIAT), plus many extras (including a six-pounder AT gun, an Otter A/C, a Bren Carrier, a RAM Kangaroo, an LVT-4, and a land mattress rocket launcher). While designed as Canadians, these could be very easily used as late war British. The infantry are sculpted by Propylene Foliescu and his work is very nice and realistic.
