Mongol cavalry troop
Company: Warlord Games
Size: 28mm ‘foot to eye’; ponies and riders are 39mm tall
Era: World War II and Korean War
Price: £21.00 for five cavalry
Interesting … one of the latest metal releases from Warlord Games is a set of five Mongol cavalry, suitable for the early and mid-20th century. The Mongols assisted the Chinese against the Japanese, sent volunteers to fight against Germany on the Eastern Front in World War II, and joined the Soviet Union’s attack on Japan in 1945. They also aided North Korea during the Korean War. The set consists of five different riders and ponies; there are two variants in the pony. The models are armed with bolt action rifles and sabres. The models are well cast and really look the part with slung bandoliers and light kit. As noted above, this versatile force can be used for several armies of the period and might stretch back far enough to be used in the ‘back of beyond’ of the 1920s and ’30s, and in the Russian Revolution.
Goblin slave infantry
Company: North Star and Osprey
Size: 26mm ‘foot to eye’ or 30mm tall
Era: Medieval fantasy
Price: £25.00 for 30 goblin slaves
As things go, in the fantasy world of Oathmark, you can’t get much lower in the pecking order than goblin slaves. Still, the maggoty bread isn’t that bad and at least the hours are regular … Aiding their more fortunate goblin brethren in battle, the slaves are armed with either slings or a variety of weapons (clubs, knives, axes). There are options for slave drivers (with whips for encouragement!) and a standard to make a bearer. The set also comes with some chains that can be attached to the slaves. Inside the box, there are six sprues, each with five slaves. There are ten different heads, which are a mixture of hooded, capped, or bare headed. One shield is provided, probably for a boss model. Construction is easy: simply add the heads and arms to the torso and add some chains if you like. Bases are provided as standard, which is a nice touch.
