This week I visited Grasse, France’s perfume capital in Provence. Chief among the exhibitions at the International Perfume Museum is Marie-Antoinette’s “nécessaire de voyage”, a monogrammed mahogany travelling case. Among Marie-Antoinette’s 94 travel essentials were a teapot and tea box, a hot chocolate pot, a gilt fruit knife, a small stove, an inkwell, mirror and manicure set. Depressingly, I am obliged to report that it is no more ridiculous than my own travel essentials kit. I expected much greater
