HE SAYING “I wouldn’t know him from a bar of soap” seems to be a. It shows two grubby tramps. One says, “I wouldn’t know you from a bar of soap”, and the other replies, “You wouldn’t know either of us – me or the soap!” Cross might’ve coined the expression, or be quoting a well-established Aussie phrase (based on the blandness of soap). Until I am shown otherwise, I am claiming this one for us – one of more than 10,000 expressions that Aussies have contributed to the English language!
