Can I get refund for gift cards not valid in Australia?

Q In June, our 11-year-old grandson visited us from Australia. We took him to Currys, buying two £50 Nintendo gift cards. However, he can’t use them back at home in Australia. Neither Currys nor Nintendo will refund us, even though the cards haven’t been used. Do we have any rights?
