Forming in ’91 and releasing their debut in ’97, Him developed as a contingent of the Norwegian black metal scene set fire to its country’s churches, inadvertently inspiring the name of the band’s fourth album.
“When we started, metal was getting a bad press with the church burnings in Norway, but I loved metal, so calling what we did ‘Love Metal’ was sort of a middle finger to everyone who might take offence at our band,” Ville explains. “We wanted to make metal thatjust like Venom were obviously going to call their album This is Ville’s guide to songs.
