It is no secret that the war had a vast impact on Scottish society and culture. It also had a profound impact on the nation’s diet. Food rationing created a sense of a shared national diet, with everyone eating broadly the same foods each week. People were encouraged to grow their own fruit and vegetables to eke out their rations, while government departments like the Ministry of Food played a vital role in boosting public knowledge about the importance of nutrition and eating a balanced diet.
