Action, Spectacle

EDITORS’ POETRY & PROSE PRIZE

A prize of $1,000 and publication in Action, Spectacle will be given annually for a poem, a short work of fiction, or a short work of creative nonfiction. English translations of works originally written in another language are accepted. Using only the online submission system, submit any number of poems totaling no more than 10 pages or up to 8,500 words of a novel or nonfiction excerpt, short story, or essay with a $20 entry fee by October 1. EVARISTO PRIZE FOR AFRICAN POETRY

A prize of $1,500 will be given annually for a group of poems by an African poet who has not yet published a full-length collection. Writers who were born in Africa, are nationals or residents of an African country, or whose parents are African are eligible. English translations of poems originally written in another language are accepted. Using only the online submission system, submit 10 published or unpublished poems of up to 40 lines each by November 1. There is no entry fee. Visit the website for complete guidelines.

LUSCHEI PRIZE FOR AFRICAN POETRY

A prize of $1,000 is given annually for a book of poetry by an African poet published in the previous year. Writers who were born in Africa, who are a national or a resident of an African country, or whose parents are African are eligible. English translations of poems originally written in another language are accepted. John Keene will judge. Publishers may submit four copies (or unbound proofs) of a poetry collection of at least 48 pages published in 2022 by October 1. There is no entry fee. ALICE JAMES AWARD

A prize of $2,000 and publication by Alice James Books is given annually for a poetry collection by a poet residing in the United States. Submit a manuscript of 48 to 100 pages with a $30 entry fee by October 16. All entries are considered for publication. Visit the website for complete guidelines.

American Academy in Rome

ROME PRIZE

Half-term and full-term fellowships of $16,000 and $30,000 respectively will be given annually to artists, academics, and creative writers, including poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers, to support the development of a project. In addition to their stipend, the fellows will each be provided with meals, a private workspace, a bedroom with a private bathroom, and the opportunity to form part of the Academy’s residential community on the Janiculum Hill in Rome alongside other affiliated fellows and visiting artists and scholars. All applicants, except those applying for the National Endowment for the Humanities postdoctoral fellowships, must be United States citizens at the time of their application. Using only the online submission system, submit a project proposal, a résumé, and a writing sample of up to 20 pages with a $40 entry fee by November 1 (or a $70 entry fee by November 15).
