Taxi strike: Deaths the worst result

The greatest damage from Santaco’s eight-day strike was that to life, income, the economy and the country’s international reputation, Winde says

The week-long taxi strike hit supermarkets, vendors,and businesses hard, but authorities said that the greatest loss was the five people who died.

The strike by the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco), which ended on Thursday, was listed as a high-level security threat for UK tourists visiting South Africa following the death of British citizen Dr Kar Hao Teoh, shot in Nyanga.

Others killed during the violence included Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (Leap) officer Zanikhaya Kwinana,
