HITTING THE RIGHT NOTES
I remember sitting in a cafe at Durban airport in 2003 at the end of my first trip there (as guest concertmaster of the KZN Philharmonic), chatting to a local businessman. “You'll be back” he said. “Once Africa gets into your soul, it never leaves”. He was right.
The following year my wife and I moved to Durban for a one-year contract. Whether it was the weekend trips south, camping at Oribi Gorge, or north, to safari at Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, or inland to the Midlands and the majestic Drakensberg, Africa entered our souls. Since then, we have returned on countless occasions. Even though the landscape and weather are undoubtedly hugely attractive, it's the people — their kind, open hospitality and warmth — that's so endearing, making us constantly want to return.
