The Island Games

Jersey won the Island Games football tournament to the chagrin of their neighbours and hosts Guernsey and go into their 2023-24 league season with a major title under their belt. For other sides at the Games, the wait for another meaningful fixture will be significantly longer.

As “Don’t Look Back in Anger” by Oasis echoed around the Corbet Field sports ground in St Sampson, Greenland’s players slumped back into their dug-out after losing their winner-takes-all final Group C game against Bermuda.

Trailing by two goals, the Arctic side had equalised through a brace from teenage sensation Nemo Thomsen only to be caught pressing for a winner. In a thrilling game, the Caribbean side caught Morten Rutkjaer’s side out on the left flank and Blaiz Hall scored the winner in the 81st minute.
