The Nakasendo or “Central Mountain Road” was part of feudal Japan’s network of highways. Back then, it post towns. Today’s visitors can still walk sections of the original route, one of the most popular of which traverses the Kiso Valley, which is easily reached from Tokyo by limited express train via Matsumoto (from where the runs the length of the valley).
