azz prog can be a wilfully knotty, tricky beast, but Bergen’s Heatwaves. Closer in spirit to late 80s/early 90s acid jazz than it is to Mahavishnu Orchestra or UK, it’s a languid affair that mixes deep grooves and breakbeats with gauzy psychedelia and the whiff of hipster folk (the title itself could equally refer to the Greek letter or the Italian sportswear brand popular with so-called ‘acid casuals’ and actor Samuel L Jackson).
