Salute to the shunters set for Avon Valley’s 1940s weekend

TWO formerWar Department diesels from the 1940s will be reunited at the AvonValley Railway as its annual 1940s weekend pays tribute to the shunting locomotives that kept so many yards running smoothly.

Taking on the title Salute To Shunters, the September 16/17 event will see Andrewvisit from the Historic Dockyard at Chatham, being reunited with the AVR’s own No. WD70043 for the first time in more than 70 years. Both and were built in 1941 as part of a batch of 20 locomotives ordered by the WD from the Drewery Car Company, which sub-contracted the construction of 10 to Andrew Barclay at Kilmarnock Works.
