‘New’ diesel pioneer is taking shape following its ‘Big Lift’

THE Ivatt Diesel Recreation Society is celebrating a year of progress in its ground-breaking aim to recreate the first main line diesel to haul passenger trains in the UK. LMS Nos. 10000 and 10001, the ancestors of all current British main line diesel locomotives, were built between 1947 and 1948 at Derby Works using an English Electric 1600hp diesel engine generator and electrics. They became BR Class D16/1 and were used on former LMS lines, and in 1953 were transferred to the Southern Region for comparison with Bulleid’s Class 16/2 diesels.
