The main problem with the Series/ GP kick-start mechanism is that once a component begins to wear, it sets off a domino effect that causes damage to other parts of the mechanism, so when you suspect there’s an issue, don’t ignore it.
The kick-start shaft
The kick-start shaft connects the pedal to the first gear cog and turns the engine over. This is the component with the most parts connected to it. Wear to the shaft itself is usually on the splines for the pedal, and they can begin to step; if they have, you must change the shaft and the pedal.
